Level Guide


We have based our Level Guide on the Forestry and Land Scotland's, Mountain Bike trail grade system. Why? Because it's tried, tested, and ultimately the best way to explain the difficulty and grades you will find on all of our Courses.


Beginner Level - Ride on Green/Easy trails

Trail: Relatively flat, wide and smooth trails with gentle climbs, descents, rollers and berms, with easy to avoid features such as rocks and potholes. Surface might be loose, uneven or muddy at times. 


Suitable: For riders who are beginning to grasp basic bike skills, are in good health and suitable for most types of Mountain Bikes.



Intermediate Level - Ride on Blue/Moderate trails

Trail: A mixture of “single-track” climbs and descents with moderate gradients, technical features like tree roots and rock steps, jumps and berms. Rollable features at controlled speed. Variable surfaces. 


Suitable: For riders with basic off-road riding skills, who have basic Mountain Bikes and are in good health.



Advanced Level - Ride on Red/Difficult Trails

Trail: A mixture of challenging climbs, tricky descents and / or avoidable features. Larger jumps, berms and rollable features at controlled speed. Technical features such as tree roots, drop-offs and large rocks. Very variable surfaces. 


Suitable: For proficient mountain bikers with good off-road riding skills & fitness riding good mountain bikes.



Expert Level - Ride on Black/Severe Trails

Trail: Long and steep climbs, descents, and jumps all with greater challenge & difficulty. Numerous hazards including drop-offs and severe sometimes unavoidable features. Rapid rate of surface change. Commitment required. 


Suitable: For expert mountain bikers with a high level of fitness riding quality off-road mountain bikes.
